Ivančice asparagus factory and asparagus
Once more famous than Pilsner beer
Ivančice used to be an area famous for growing asparagus. It was more famous than Pilsner beer! It was exported also to Vienna because the Empress Sissi herself loved it (and she was very particular about what she put in her aristocratic mouth). But the green crop did not survive the two world wars and the following communism.
Today, its glory is commemorated by the newly built municipal asparagus factory and the popular Asparagus and wine festival taking place in May. In addition to an accompanying programme such as a cookery show or a craft fair in the main square, you can taste dozens of asparagus specialties and savour local wines in the courtyard of the Renaissance town hall. And you'll probably buy a "bouquet" of fresh asparagus for your own home cooking.
