Halfway trip to Pernštejn (12.9 km)

Are you coming from Brno? Hop on the S3 or R9 train at the main station and get off in Tišnov. And since we're starting the trip in this town, we'll tell you something about it. At the end of the 19th century, Tišnov was declared a climatic place for its excellent location and beautiful surroundings, and a sanatorium and a hydrotherapy institute were built here. Cultural giants such as Halas and Janáček stayed here. Today, the sanatorium is a hospital, and it was pictured in the TV series Cops and Robbers - together with the local Art Nouveau Villa Jaroch and Villa Franke. Are you a fan of architecture? Then check out the important functionalist building of the former municipal savings bank by architects Fuchs and Kumpošt.

From the Tišnov railway station head to the upper end of the náměstí Míru square, from there follow the blue hiking trail under the Květnice hill towards Lomnička, Šerkovice and Lomnice.

Lomnice, an urban gem

Walk through the picturesque town of Lomnice with your eyes wide open. Not only thanks to its large square, it is an urban pearl of South Moravia. In addition to the promontory fort (under reconstruction), there is a large church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, a Baroque town hall, a manor inn, a rectory and a brewery. A rarity is the (probably the only one in the Czech Republic) statue of the King of Beer Gambrinus in the niche of the local brewery with the clearly ambiguous name of Genius Noci (Genius of the Night).

Why Jewish people place rocks on tombstones

The Jewish quarter with its square, former rabbinate, synagogue and mysterious Jewish cemetery adds to the strong atmosphere of the place. The cemetery has almost a thousand tombstones. (Have you noticed the rocks on the tombstones here or in other Jewish cemeteries? Instead of flowers and candles, the Jewish people place stones on the tombstones as a reminder that they pray for the dead.)

After exploring the charming town, follow the green trail through Veselský chlum, a passage of beautiful views all the way to the Svratka River. You will reach Borač, where you can take the train back to Tišnov (line S31) and from there to Brno. Or are you tempted to continue on to Pernštejn? Then skip to the continuation of the trip below, the Gate of Heaven and a Hollywood-level castle await you at the finish.

On foot to Pernštejn through the valley of the Svratka River (12.6 km)

You can reach Borač on foot as part of the previous trip or get off the train from Tišnov. In Borač, check out the iron truss bridge, then follow the red tourist sign. It will take you to Nedvědice through the beautiful parts around the Svratka River through the historic Doubravník. (The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is worth a closer look. It is made of blue marble from Nedvědice, built by the Lords of Pernštejn themselves as their family tomb. We will tell you more about the marble in a bit.)

On the way you will meet a covered wooden bridge in Černvír. It is the oldest covered wooden footbridge in Moravia and dates back to 1718. The bridge has seen a lot over the centuries. For example, a fire, but also a firefight between Germans and local partisans at the end of World War II.

For treasure to the information centre

In Nedvědice, the local information centre exhibits the local silver treasure. There are two fairy tales that take place here. A man went into the forest and tripped over a jug full of silver coins. He was honest to the bone, so he didn't keep the treasure and handed it over. And you can see it today in the Nedvědice information centre. There is also a small exhibition of tools used in the mining and processing of local marble (Pernštejn Castle and the aforementioned Doubravník Church were built from it). The second fairy tale for children is called Beads of the Chambermaid Eliška, you can download the playing card here.

And now it's just a short walk to Pernštejn. It is pictured in over 50 films, so the climb you have ahead of you is well worth it.

And how to get back?

By train from Nedvědice station (line S31) to Tišnov and from there to Brno.

Gastro tips for the Pernštejn trip

Tišnov beer wins one award after another, and Grádo also boasts a beer spa. The Květnice brewery is not afraid to experiment with lesser-known beer styles, while Doubravník brews a quality rye lager. Lomnice's Genius Noci cheers to oatmeal lager and other specialties in its private beer-lovers club (open on weekends). Are you excited about the beer heaven of the Tišnov region? Download a playing card from us and go collect stamps on the Tišnov Beer Trail.

In Nedvědice, next to the information centre, don't miss out on the famous Milena pastry shop, where gourmets have been coming for apple strudel for generations. In the car park under Pernštejn you can not only pet the local mascot - the raspberry pig - but also sit on the beer throne. Bistro Malinová louka prides itself on offering local products and a there's a holiday atmosphere.
