Dolní Kounice Synagogue

One of the most beautiful in the country

The remains of the Jewish ghetto, the cemetery above the town (with a perfect view of the town) and the restored early Baroque synagogue - one of the oldest synagogues in Moravia - all testify to the important Jewish element in Dolní Kounice.

Look for it on the west side of the square. A protected cultural monument from 1645 now serves cultural and social purposes. From the outside it looks unobtrusive... but inside it's a gem! It's a bit odd, unusual - It's not oriented to the cardinal points as used to be common, but it's in keeping with the local Christian churches. And why is it one of the most beautiful in the country? The surviving Hebrew wall inscriptions speak to visitors with ornamental decoration and purity, as does the overall early Baroque character of the interior. When exploring Kounice, be sure to visit it - the friendly guides from the local information centre will be happy to show you around, just book a tour of the synagogue or the entire town.
