Napoleon in Brno
On Saturday, November 23, 2024, we continue the tradition of commemorating Emperor Napoleon's arrival in the city in 1805. This year, you can see it live again!
We’ll begin at 5:30 PM on Moravské náměstí, where a parade of soldiers, led by Napoleon on horseback and on foot, will march through the center of Brno. From Liberty Square, we’ll proceed to the Town Hall, where Emperor Napoleon will receive the symbolic key to the city.
A commemoration for all war victims will then take place at the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul.
The inspiration for this event comes from a real historical moment, as on November 20, 1805, French Emperor Napoleon arrived in Brno with his army and stayed at the Governor's Palace. The French forces occupied the city almost without resistance, as the Austrian garrison withdrew to Olomouc, abandoning the Špilberk fortress. This allowed Napoleon and his army to use Brno as a base to prepare for the upcoming victorious Battle of Austerlitz (December 2, 1805).
