Krchůvek memorial, battlefield and conciliation cross

The final resting place of the unfortunate soldiers

Every battle leaves many dead regardless of sides - There are casualties for winners and losers alike. The Battle of Austerlitz was certainly no exception. At the end of the famous battle in December 1805, 30,000 dead and wounded remained on the battlefield. In the following days, they were buried in mass graves scattered across the battlefield.

On the hill Zlatá hora above Křenovice you will find one such place in a small grove. (The bike route no. 5097 and the green tourist trail from the Cairn of Peace Memorial leads here.) It is called Krchůvek. There lie not only the remains of the soldiers from the Slavkov massacre, but also of the victims of cholera. From this place, there is a beautiful view of the whole region and right across the road, you can see the ancient conciliation cross. The conciliation cross stones used to be a reminder of mostly tragic events of local significance - For us today they are physical evidence of ancestral spirituality. This conciliation cross on Zlatá hora is a reminder of an ancient tale where a local ploughman's horse is said to have accidentally killed a girl while she was harvesting grass on the border.

There is a beautiful view of Pozořice from here and you can read one of the information boards of the nature trail dedicated to the Battle of the Three Emperors nearby.
