BISTRO WINSTON
Bistro right at Veveří Castle
In 1908, the Royal Veveří Castle hosted the British Prime Minister, politician, journalist, statesman, and undoubtedly one of the most important personalities of the 20th century, Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill (1874-1965). Winston Churchill's stay here is commemorated not only by a commemorative plaque at the entrance to the castle, but also by Winston Bistro since 2022.
He visited Veveří repeatedly at the invitation of his friend, the last private owner of Veveří Castle and estate, Mauritz Arnold De Forest. He even spent his honeymoon with his wife Clementine here in 1908.
In the first half of the 20th century, Britain controlled vast territories in Africa and Asia - including India, Ceylon (today's Sri Lanka), Singapore and many other countries. The inhabitants of the now former colonies coming to Britain brought their lifestyle, including their cuisine. So today curries and masala are as quintessentially British as fried cod and chips or sandwiches.
Winston Churchill liked traditional English cuisine and French food and avoided Chinese food and sauerkraut (which he said he thought was too German). The inspiration for our bistro menu came from a book of recipes by Churchill's cook, Georgina Landemare. Besides predominantly French recipes, there are also traces of the flavours of distant lands, for at that time "the sun was never set on the British Empire".
That's why we've included not only the contemporary British classics but also more exotic flavours of the Far East or Africa in the bistro's menu. The exotic flavours are included mainly in weekend menus when we also bring in dishes made from seasonal ingredients. We also use products from regional producers from the Brno region, including local breweries or winemakers.
